Alien: Romulus — Official Trailer, Poster and Release Date
With about two months to go before its theatrical release, “Alien: Romulus” has dropped a new trailer, offering a closer look at its plot, characters, and scares.“Alien: Romulus” takes the phenomenally successful “Alien” franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.
The latest trailer for “Alien: Romulus” ramps up the tension with face-huggers, acid blood, and zero-gravity thrills.
The Alien franchise has had a rollercoaster journey over the decades, with its quality fluctuating and its mythology expanding in often contradictory ways. Fans have witnessed the fearsome xenomorphs clash with the Predator extraterrestrials, transcending comic books and video games.
After Ridley Scott’s prequel trilogy was cut short and “Prey” revitalized the Predator saga, Disney and 20th Century Studios are aiming to do the same for Alien. Early indications suggest writer-director Fede Álvarez (Evil Dead 2013, Don’t Breathe) might have succeeded whereas others have not by returning to the series’ roots while introducing new elements.
Álvarez previously teased that his movie combines the best of the first two installments, which are universally beloved despite their differences. The new trailer’s visuals echo “Alien” (1979) but also carry the distinct touch of James Cameron’s “Aliens” (1986). Fans of the “Alien: Isolation” video game might also notice similarities, as the trailer draws inspiration from Creative Assembly’s 2014 horror FPS.
Regarding the plot, the new trailer reveals little beyond a group of colonist teenagers seeking better lives who are scavenging from the wrong space station. While the setup may seem familiar, the script promises some surprises. Notably, there is no Ellen Ripley cameo, as the film is set during the 57 years between “Alien” and “Aliens.”
Alongside the nerve-wracking trailer, Disney and 20th Century Studios released a striking red poster confirming the film’s theatrical release date: August 16, 2024.
The cast is led by Cailee Spaeny (Pacific Rim: Uprising) as Rain Carradine, with Isabela Merced (Transformers: The Last Knight) as Kay, Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone) as Tyler, David Jonsson (Industry) as Andy, Spike Fearn (Aftersun) as Bjorn, and newcomer Aileen Wu. Fede Álvarez co-wrote the script with longtime collaborator Rodo Sayagues, while Alien legend Ridley Scott serves as producer.
“Alien: Romulus” hits theaters on August 16, 2024.
